Eilat 4 - Housing Block, Tel Aviv

Set in the south of TLV this housing block is overriding a single story ottoman building that is used for small shops & workshops. The design initiative was to refrain from demolishing the existing building at all costs (it is expensive..) and to develop the new building as an independent entity directly on it's top. The "Swiss-cheese" concept is derived out of the volumetric master plan regulations for building rights that is the legacy of the British rule that has replaced the ottomans. Instead of counter-levering the terraces as it is accustomed in Israel, the terraces are carved into the building mass and become a flexible extension of the living rooms.
